Red Rover is a fast team game.

It is often played on school playgrounds. Two teams stand in lines. They are about thirty feet apart. The players hold hands to make a strong chain.

One team starts the game. They call a player from the other team. They say, "Red Rover, Red Rover, let [name] come over!" That player must run fast. Their goal is to break the hand chain.

If the runner breaks the chain, they win a person. They pick one of the broken links to join their team. If they fail, they must join the other team instead. The game continues like this. It ends when one team has no players left.

This game has many names around the world. In China, it is called "Forcing the City Gates." In Germany, people call it "The King's Run." In Hungary, they say, "King, give us a soldier!" Some schools do not allow the game. They worry that players might get hurt during the run. Still, many children love the thrill of the game.
