Red Rover is an exciting team game often played on school playgrounds.

It is a game of strength and speed. Two teams stand in long lines facing each other. These lines are usually about thirty feet apart. The players in each line hold hands or link arms tightly. This creates a strong human chain that the other team must try to break. People love this game because it feels like a brave challenge. It brings friends together to work as one unit.

To play, one team starts by calling out a specific person from the other side. They might shout, "Red Rover, Red Rover, let [name] come over!" The chosen player must then run as fast as they can toward the calling team. Their goal is to burst through the middle of the linked hands. If the runner breaks the chain, they get to pick one of the players they broke free. That person then joins their team. If the runner fails to break the chain, they must join the team that called them.

The game has changed a lot over many years. Originally, it was a simple tag game with just one catcher in the middle. The person in the center would call names to challenge players. By the 1930s, the rules began to shift toward the team version we know today. A version published in 1945 by Neva Leona Boyd showed how the two styles merged. This new way used a chain of players to make the game more difficult. This change turned a simple running game into a true combat game between two sides.

History shows that similar games have existed in many places for a long time. In 1862, a German book described a game called Kettenreißen, which means chain breaking. In 1901, a professor named Isaac Taylor Headland recorded a Chinese version called Forcing the City Gates. In the United States, the game was first recorded in New York in 1891. Some people think the name might come from a novel by James Fenimore Cooper. This book featured a pirate ship named the Red Rover that traveled the British seas.

Red Rover has many different names across the world. In Hungary, players say, "King, give us a soldier!" In the Czech Republic, they call it "The king sends out his army." Even in Russia, the game is known as "Ali Baba." Because the game involves running into people, some schools have banned it. They worry that players might get hurt during the physical contact. However, the game remains a famous part of playground culture.
