Tetherball is an exciting game for two players.

It uses a ball that hangs from a pole. The ball is tied to the pole by a rope. Two people stand on opposite sides of the pole. One player hits the ball in a clockwise direction. The other player hits it in a counterclockwise direction. The goal is to wrap the ball around the pole. You win when the rope stops the ball from moving. The ball must hit the pole above a certain line.

To start, one player must serve the ball. They usually hold the ball and hit it with their other hand. The other player tries to hit it back. You can use your open hand or your fist. The server often has an advantage at the start. This is because they have more control over the ball. You must hit the ball carefully to win. You want to make it hard for your opponent to change its direction.

There is a history to this kind of play. An early version was called swingball. Gavin Gormely invented swingball in South Africa. It used racquets to hit a tennis ball. A book from 1909 described this version. The game we know as tetherball used a volleyball. This change happened after 1895 when volleyball was invented. In the 1920s, schools and parks began adding tetherball to their play areas.

Rules help keep the game fair for everyone. You cannot step onto your opponent's side of the pole. You also cannot touch the rope instead of the ball. If you hit the ball too early, you commit a violation. A violation might mean you are out of the game. Sometimes, the other player gets a penalty wrap. If a person breaks a rule on purpose, they may lose the game. If you play with only two people, the loser gets to serve next.

Setting up a tetherball court is quite simple. You need a pole, a rope, and a ball. The ball is similar to a volleyball but firmer. The rope is usually 8 to 10 feet long. The pole stays still using a heavy base. Some bases use sand, water, or concrete to stay down. You can play on many surfaces like grass or sand. You can even play on gravel or asphalt. Schools like tetherball because the equipment lasts a long time. It does not get lost like other balls.
