Players use a racquet to hit a hollow, bouncy rubber ball. You can play a match by yourself, which is called singles. You can also play with a partner, which is called doubles. The goal is to hit the ball against the front wall. You want to do this so the other player cannot hit it back. Unlike tennis, there is no net in the middle of the court. In fact, the walls and even the ceiling are part of the game.

To play a point, you must start with a serve. The server bounces the ball on the floor first. Then, they hit the ball directly against the front wall. The ball must land on the floor past a specific red line. After the serve, players hit the ball back and forth. The ball must hit the front wall before it touches the ground. If the ball hits two side walls before the floor, it is a fault. Players often wear eyeguards to keep their eyes safe from the fast ball.

A man named Joseph Sobek created the modern sport in 1950. He worked at a YMCA in Greenwich, Connecticut. Sobek was already a professional player of tennis and handball. He wanted a sport that was fast and easy to learn. He took ideas from squash and paddleball to make his game. He even designed the very first racquet with strings. He called his new game "paddle rackets" at first. In 1952, he started an association to write down the official rules.

The game grew very quickly across the United States. By 1974, about 3.1 million people were playing the sport. Today, the number of players is estimated at 5.6 million. There are many different groups that run professional tournaments. The International Racquetball Tour is the main group for men. The Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour is the main group for women. There are also big world championships held every two years. Players from the United States have won many of these titles.

Racquetball is a lot like other sports you might know. It is similar to American handball, which is played in many countries. It is also like a British sport called Squash 57. In the United Kingdom, people play a version called racketball. That version uses a smaller ball and a different court. In the U.S., players use balls in many colors. Blue balls are common for beginners, while red balls are the fastest. No matter the color, the game is always about speed and skill.
