Players use their hands to hit a small rubber ball against a wall. The goal is to hit the ball so your opponent cannot return it. If the ball hits the ground twice, the play ends.

There are three main ways to play this game. Four-wall handball happens in a court shaped like a box. Three-wall handball has no back wall. One-wall handball uses just one big wall and is very popular. You can play with two people in singles or four people in doubles. Some people also play a three-person game called cutthroat.

To start a four-wall game, a player stands in the service zone.

The server drops the ball and hits it after one bounce. The ball must hit the front wall first. It can hit one side wall before it bounces on the floor. The ball must land past a short line on the floor. If the server makes two mistakes in a row, they are "put out." This means they become the receiver. The receiver must hit the ball back against the wall. They can hit it directly or after it bounces once. The ball can bounce on the floor up to two times.

People have played games with balls for a very long time. Ancient Egyptians and even the writer Homer are linked to such games. The Aztecs played a famous game called the Mesoamerican ballgame. Many different versions of wall games exist around the world. These include Basque pelota from Europe and Gaelic handball from Ireland. In 1287, a group in Exeter banned the game because it damaged buildings. In 1427, King James I of Scotland even blocked a window to stop the game.

Modern handball grew quickly in the United States. The first record of the modern game mentions courts in San Francisco in 1873.

In the early 1900s, people in New York City created one-wall handball. They hit tennis balls against wooden jetties at the beach. By the 1930s, thousands of these courts were built in New York. National championships have been held every year since 1919. The United States Handball Association has run these since 1950.

Handball has helped create many other popular sports.

For example, paddleball was made by using wooden paddles on handball courts. Earl Riskey invented four-wall paddleball in 1930 at the University of Michigan. Another sport, racquetball, was invented in 1949 by Joseph Sobek. He used a strung racquet to play the game in Connecticut. Players often wear goggles because the small balls move very fast. These balls are called "ace balls" and come in red or white.
