Fistball is a fast and athletic team sport.

It is very similar to volleyball in many ways. Two teams compete on two half-fields. They are separated by a net. The net is up to two meters high for men.

Each team has five players on the court. The goal is to hit the ball over the net. You must use your arm or a closed fist. You cannot use your open palm or your head. This makes the game a unique challenge for the players.

There are special rules for how the ball moves. Each team can touch the ball up to three times. Unlike volleyball, the ball can bounce once before a player hits it.

Players usually use these three hits to save, set, and spike. A spike is a strong hit to send the ball down. The ball is made of leather and filled with air. It is quite hard, much like a soccer ball.

A player can spike the ball at speeds of 100 to 120 km/h.

Fistball has a very long and interesting history. It likely started in Southern Europe, perhaps in Italy. A Roman Emperor named Gordian III mentioned it in 240 AD.

In the 1500s, rules for an Italian version were recorded. Later, it became a popular pastime for nobles. Georg Weber helped bring the sport to Germany in 1870. He and Heinrich Schnell wrote the first organized rules in 1894. The sport then spread to many other parts of the world.

Today, many countries enjoy playing this game. It is very popular in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Brazil also plays it often.

Germany is currently the World Champion for both men and women. The International Fistball Association was founded in 1960. This group helps manage the sport globally. The first men's World Championship was held in Linz, Austria, in 1968. The first women's World Championship took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1994. These big tournaments happen every four years.

Players must be very fit to play well. They use different formations to cover the large field.

In the summer, they play outside on grass. In the winter, they play inside on a court. One common shape is the W-shape for grass. Another is the U-shape for indoor wood floors.

Each player stays in a fixed position. They become specialists in their specific spot. This helps the team defend against fast, powerful shots.
