Handball is a fast and exciting team sport.

Two teams compete to score goals by throwing a ball into the opponent's net. Each team has seven players on the court. This includes six court players and one goalkeeper.

The game is known for having high scores. Professional teams often score between 20 and 35 goals in a single match. It is a sport that brings people together through skill and speed.

To play the game, players must follow specific rules for moving the ball. You cannot touch the ball with your feet unless you are the goalkeeper.

When holding the ball, a player can dribble like in basketball. They can also take up to three steps or hold the ball for three seconds. A special area called the crease or the zone surrounds the goal. Only the goalkeeper is allowed to stand inside this six-metre zone.

To score, an attacker might jump into the air over the zone. They must release the ball before their feet touch the ground.

People have played games like this for a very long time. Ancient Greek art shows youths playing versions of handball.

There are also records of similar games in medieval France and among the Inuit in Greenland. Modern handball began to take its current shape in northern Europe. It grew from games like the Danish håndbold and German torball. These early versions helped lead to the organized sport we see today.

The modern rules of handball were born in Berlin, Germany.

On 29 October 1917, Karl Schelenz, Max Heiser, and Erich Konigh published the first set of rules. This date is considered the official birth of the sport. The first official match was played in Berlin later that same year. International games began for men in 1925 and for women in 1930. The sport eventually became a part of the Olympic Games.

Handball is a major part of global sports culture. Men's handball was at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. It returned as an indoor sport at the 1972 Munich Olympics. Women's handball joined the Olympics in 1976.
