It is known as the fastest field sport in the world. People play it with great pride and skill. Women play a version of the game called camogie. Both games share the same Gaelic roots. UNESCO even lists hurling as a special part of world cultural heritage. It is a sport that people truly love and cherish.

Players use an ash wood stick called a hurley or a hurl.

They use it to hit a small ball called a sliotar. The sliotar has a cork center and a leather cover. To score, players hit the ball between H-shaped goalposts.

If the ball goes over the crossbar, it is one point. If the ball goes under the bar into the net, it is a goal worth three points. A goalkeeper stays in the net to guard it.

This game has a very long history in Ireland. The earliest written records appear in Irish law tracts from the seventh century. Archaeologists have found evidence of the game from the twelfth century. The first written rules were published in January 1883 by the Dublin Hurling Club. Today, the Gaelic Athletic Association, or GAA, manages the sport. It is a game that has been passed down through many generations.

Each team has fifteen players on the field.
