It is one of the four Gaelic games managed by the Gaelic Athletic Association, or GAA. This is the largest sporting group in Ireland. People love this game because it is a strictly amateur sport. This means that players, coaches, and managers do not receive any money for their work. The game brings people together through skill and pride. It is a major part of Irish culture and identity.

Two teams of 15 players compete on a rectangular grass pitch.

Players move the ball using several different skills. They can kick the ball or use a hand-pass to teammates. They also use a move called soloing. In soloing, a player drops the ball and kicks it upward into their hands. To score, players aim for H-shaped posts. You can score a point by kicking the ball over the crossbar.

A goal is worth three points and happens when the ball is kicked into the net.

The history of football in Ireland goes back a very long time.

There is a legal record of football in Ireland from the year 1308. Long ago, people played a game called caid. In County Kerry, these games could be very large. Some versions were cross-country games that lasted a whole Sunday. People even played matches between different counties as early as 1712. These old games helped lead to the modern sport we see today.

The modern version of the game began to take shape in the late 1800s. The GAA was formed in 1884 to organize the sport and promote Irish traditions. They wanted to create a game that was different from English sports. In 1887, the first All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final was won by a club from County Limerick. Today, the biggest game is held every year at Croke Park in Dublin.

It is very popular among the Irish diaspora, which are people living outside of Ireland. In New York City, Gaelic Park is a large place built just for these sports. The game is also similar to Australian rules football. Because of these similarities, players sometimes play a hybrid sport called international rules football. This has been played in Test matches since 1998.
