These games are very popular in North America. People play them for fun in backyards or as a big job in professional leagues. The name comes from how the playing fields used to look. Long ago, fields had many lines crossing each other. This made a pattern that looked like a metal cooking gridiron.

Today, players use yard lines instead of that old grid pattern.

Players use a special brown ball to play the game. The ball is shaped like a prolate spheroid, which means it has pointed ends. This shape makes it easier to throw. Because the game can be physical, players wear protective gear. They wear hard plastic helmets to protect their heads. They also wear thick shoulder pads. In some versions, like flag football, players do not tackle. Instead, they pull a flag from a belt to stop the play. Flag football will even be in the 2028 Summer Olympics!

This sport has a long and interesting history. It grew from older games like rugby and soccer during the 1800s. The first recorded game happened in November 1861 at the University of Toronto. Later, two famous schools played a big game in 1874. Harvard University played McGill University using different sets of rules. Harvard liked the rugby-style rules from McGill. Because of this, the American version of the game began to change. It slowly became different from the rugby games played in other places.

There are two main ways to play these games. American football is the most famous version. It uses 11 players on each team. They use a system of four downs to move the ball. In 1906, they added the forward pass. This allowed a quarterback to throw the ball to a receiver. Canadian football is also very popular. It uses 12 players on each team. Canadian teams have three downs instead of four. They can also score a single point called a rouge.

Many different groups manage these sports today. The International Federation of American Football, or IFAF, is the big group for the whole world. They include both American and Canadian football under their umbrella. In Canada, a group called Football Canada helps run the game. There are also many smaller versions of the sport. Some teams play on smaller fields with only six or eight players. This happens in small towns or inside indoor arenas. Whether it is played in a huge stadium or a park, people love the skill and teamwork of the game.
