Players move the ball by running or kicking it down the field. They cannot throw the ball forward to a teammate. Instead, they must pass the ball sideways or backward. Unlike American football, players do not wear heavy pads or helmets. They use skill and discipline to manage the physical contact. This makes the game very fast and active.

There are two main ways to play: rugby union and rugby league. In rugby union, teams have 15 players on the field. They use special moves like the scrum or the line-out.

A line-out happens when players stand in lines to catch a thrown ball. A scrum is when players push against each other to get the ball.

Rugby league has 13 players and different rules. These rules make the game faster for fans to watch. For example, league teams have only six tackles to score. If they do not score by then, they lose the ball.

This sport began at Rugby School in Warwickshire, England. The rules were first written down in 1845.

Carrying and tossing a ball dates back to the Middle Ages. In the 1800s, the sport spread to other schools and the British Empire. A big change happened in 1895 at the George Hotel in Huddersfield. Twenty-one clubs left the Rugby Football Union to form their own group. They wanted to pay players for time lost from work. This group eventually became the Rugby Football League in 1922.

Today, many countries around the world love these sports. Rugby union is the most popular version globally. It is the national sport in places like New Zealand, Fiji, and Samoa.

The biggest tournament is the Rugby World Cup. Rugby league is also very popular in Australia and England. In Papua New Guinea, it is the national sport. There are also big professional leagues like the Super League in Europe. Even the Olympic Games now include rugby sevens, which uses seven players per team.

Rugby is different from other sports you might know. Canadian and American football used to be seen as types of rugby. However, they changed their rules so much that they are now separate. The rugby ball itself is very specific too. It is oval and made of leather or synthetic material. It must weigh between 410 and 460 grams. Because the ball is shaped this way, it changes how the game flows. It is a unique way for people to play together and compete.
