The main goal is to move an inflatable ball toward an opponent's end. Players try to get the ball into a goal or between goalposts. You must use only your body to move the ball. This means you can carry, throw, or kick it. However, you cannot use tools like bats or sticks.

Most teams have between 11 and 18 players on the field. Some smaller versions use only five or more players per team.

There are two main ways to play these games. Some are called carrying codes, such as American football or rugby union. In these games, players hold the ball or pass it by hand. Other games are called kicking codes, like association football or Gaelic football. In these versions, players mostly use their feet to move the ball. Handling the ball is very limited in these kicking games. Players use skills like passing, tackling, and catching to win. They must also follow rules like the offside rule to keep play fair.

People have been playing ball games for a very long time.

Many rules grew out of games played at English public schools. These games were often called "mob football" in the Middle Ages. In those days, huge crowds played in towns during religious festivals. By the end of the 19th century, different regional rules were forming. For example, Gaelic football used local rules to keep its heritage alive. In 1888, the Football League was founded in England. This was the first of many professional groups for the sport.

Today, football is one of the most popular sports on Earth.
