Table football is a fast game played on a tabletop.

It is loosely based on the sport of association football. People often call it foosball or table soccer. The goal is to move a ball into the opponent's goal. You do this by moving metal rods. These rods have small figures attached to them. These figures look like players on a football team.

It is a game that brings people together for fun.

To play, you must manipulate the rods to control the figures. Each team usually has four rows of men. These rows include a goalkeeper, defenders, midfielders, and strikers. You can use the rods to pass or kick the ball. Sometimes a ball leaves the table or gets stuck. This is called a dead ball. In expert matches, the ball can move very fast. It can reach speeds of 56 km/h.

Players must follow rules to keep the game fair. For example, you cannot spin the rods in a full circle.

Many people helped create the game we know today. Patents for similar games appeared in Germany and France in the 1890s. In 1921, Harold Searles Thornton patented a version in the United Kingdom. He got his idea from a box of matches. Later, Lucien Rosengart wanted to entertain his grandchildren in the 1930s. He called his version babyfoot. In 1937, Alejandro Finisterre patented futbolín in Madrid, Spain. His design is used in modern table football.

Table football is played all over the world. In 2002, the International Table Soccer Federation (ITSF) was started in France. This group helps run big international competitions. They organize the World Cup and the World Championships. In 2013, almost 500 players from 30 countries met in Nantes, France. The game is also popular in many countries in Asia. For example, tournaments have been held in China, Taiwan, and Malaysia.

Even the Philippines has hosted big events like the Manila Bay Open.

There are many different types of tables and ways to play. An adult table is usually 150 cm long and 90 cm wide. Some tables use plastic figures, while others use metal or wood. Even the balls can be different, made of plastic or cork. You can play singles with one person or doubles with four. In doubles, two people work as a team on each side.

Some players even use special moves. One move is called a "back-stabbing" shot. This is when the ball hits the wall and bounces into the goal.
