Futsal is an exciting, fast-paced sport played on a small court.

It is a smaller version of association football. Two teams of five players compete against each other. Each team has one goalkeeper to guard the goal. Players use their feet to move a ball. They try to score by kicking the ball into the opponent's goal. The team with the most goals wins the match. If the score is even, the game ends in a draw.

Many people love this game because it is very quick. It requires great skill and fast thinking.

Playing futsal feels different than playing regular football. The game is played on a hardcourt surface.

This surface is marked with lines to show the boundaries. Unlike indoor soccer, there are no walls or boards around the pitch. The ball is also special for this sport. It is smaller and heavier than a standard football. It has a lower bounce so it stays near the ground. This helps players control the ball in tiny spaces. Because the ball stays low, players rarely use their heads to hit it.

The history of futsal began in 1930 in Montevideo, Uruguay. A physical education teacher named Juan Ceriani created it for YMCAs. He wanted a game that could be played both indoors and outdoors. To make the rules, he looked at many different sports. He took the number of players from basketball. He used goalkeeper rules from water polo. He also used rules from hockey and handball. This helped create a game that was easier to play than regular football.

The YMCA helped spread the game across South America very quickly.

Futsal has grown into a massive global sport with many rules.

A match has two 20-minute periods of active play. Teams can use unlimited substitutions to keep the game fast. In the 1960s, a Brazilian journalist named José Antônio Inglêz may have named it. The name "futsal" comes from words for "indoor football" in Portuguese and Spanish. Today, over 30 million people play the sport worldwide. As of 2024, FIFA says the game is very popular. In 2014, a huge match in Brazil had 56,483 fans watching.

Many people use futsal to become better at other sports. Coaches often use it to help players learn ball control. It teaches players how to pass and move in tight spots. Because the game is so technical, it builds great skill. Futsal is very popular in South America and the Iberian Peninsula. In these places, there are many professional teams. In other parts of the world, people play it for fun.
