Today, the group has 211 national associations as members. These members belong to six regional groups called confederations. These include groups for Africa, Asia, Europe, North and Central America, Oceania, and South America.

FIFA works in many different ways to manage the sport. One big job is organizing major tournaments for the world to watch. The most famous event is the Men's World Cup, which started in 1930. There is also a Women's World Cup that began in 1991. FIFA also helps set the rules for how the game is played. A group called the International Football Association Board helps make these laws. FIFA then makes sure everyone follows them during their big matches.

The story of FIFA began a long time ago in Paris. It was founded on May 21, 1904, at a place called Rue Saint Honoré 229. Eight groups from Europe helped start the organization. These were from Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. The very first president was a man named Robert Guérin. Later, a man from England named Daniel Burley Woolfall became the leader. As time went on, more countries joined from places like South Africa and the United States.

Running such a huge group involves a lot of money and people. In 2022, FIFA had revenues of over US$5.8 billion from things like sponsorships. This money helps pay for the many games they host. However, the group has faced some very hard times with its leaders. Some officials were accused of making bad choices or being dishonest. This led to many arrests by the police in 2015. Several leaders, including Sepp Blatter, had to leave their jobs because of these problems.

Even with these hard moments, the organization continues to move forward. A new leader named Gianni Infantino was elected in 2016. He works with a large staff of about 280 people. They use a special anthem to start many big matches. This music was composed by a man named Franz Lambert. It helps make the start of a big game feel very special for the players and fans. Today, FIFA continues to connect people through the game of soccer.
