He was born in a place called Visp in Switzerland. He studied business and economics at the University of Lausanne in 1959. Before leading the big soccer group known as FIFA, he had many different jobs. He worked for a tourist board and a hockey group. He even helped organize the Olympic Games in 1972 and 1976. These jobs helped him learn how to manage large groups of people.

Blatter spent a long time working inside FIFA. He first worked as a technical director from 1975 to 1981. After that, he served as the general secretary for seventeen years. On June 8, 1998, he was elected as the eighth president of FIFA.

He took over the job from a man named João Havelange. Blatter was re-elected as president many times in 2002, 2007, 2011, and 2015. During his time in charge, the amount of money FIFA made grew a lot.

He changed how the soccer world worked by helping more countries join in. He gave more influence to many countries in Africa and Asia. This happened by adding more teams to different soccer tournaments. One of the biggest and most debated choices was giving the 2022 World Cup to Qatar.

However, Blatter's time as leader was filled with many serious problems. People often accused him of financial mismanagement and corruption. This means people thought money was not being handled in a fair way. There were claims that people used bribes to win votes for big events.
