Waldheim's early life changed because of big political shifts. In 1938, Germany took control of Austria. Waldheim and his family did not like this. He was even attacked by Nazis while campaigning against the takeover. His father lost his job, and Waldheim lost his school scholarship. To keep studying law, he worked as a tutor. He also joined the Nazi student group and the SA. During World War II, he served in the German army. He worked as a squad leader on the Eastern Front. He was wounded in December 1941 but returned to service in 1942.

His military service became a big topic later in life.

From 1942 to 1945, he worked in Greece and Yugoslavia. He held roles like an interpreter and an assistant officer. In 1986, people found out new details about his time in the war. They learned he worked for Army Group E. This group was led by General Alexander Löhr. Some people were worried because prisoners were shot near Waldheim's office. Waldheim said he did not know about these killings. He said he felt powerless to stop the bad things happening.

After the war, Waldheim started a new path in diplomacy. He joined the Austrian diplomatic service in 1945. He worked in many different places around the world. He was a secretary in Paris and an ambassador to Canada. In 1964, he became the representative for Austria at the United Nations. He also served as the Austrian Minister for Foreign Affairs. In 1971, he ran for president of Austria but lost. This loss led him to run for the top job at the United Nations instead. He won that position in 1972 after a complex voting process.

As secretary-general, Waldheim helped lead many important global meetings. He worked on topics like the environment and the law of the sea. He also held conferences about food and women's rights. His time at the UN involved many different countries and leaders. Even during difficult times, like when dictator Idi Amin sent him a telegram, Waldheim stayed in his role. He expressed that the UN condemned racial discrimination and genocide. He lived to be a very old man, passing away in 2007. His life showed how much history can change a person's story.
