During World War II, Waldheim served in the German army. He worked in places like Greece and Yugoslavia. In 1986, people found out new facts about his time in the war. They learned he worked as an officer. People were worried because he was near places where many people were treated unfairly. Waldheim said he did not know about these bad things. He said he felt powerless to stop them.

Even with these worries, he had a long career. He worked in many countries, like Canada and France. He led many big meetings for the United Nations. He talked about the environment and the sea. He was a very busy man in the world of politics.
