He was born on July 17, 1920, in Barcelona, Spain. He grew up in a wealthy family in the Catalonia region. During the Spanish Civil War in 1938, he served as a medical assistant. Later, he studied business in Barcelona, London, and the United States. He also enjoyed playing roller hockey as a student. He even helped create World Championships for that sport in 1951.

Samaranch spent many years working in government and sports groups. He served as a city councilor for Barcelona starting in 1954. In 1967, he became a delegate for sports in the Spanish Parliament. He also led the Spanish National Olympic Committee from 1967 to 1970. After that, he worked as the Spanish Ambassador to the Soviet Union and Mongolia. These roles helped him learn how to work with many different countries. These experiences prepared him for his biggest job in the Olympic movement.

In 1980, Samaranch was elected as the seventh president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). He took over the role from Lord Killanin in August of that year. He served as president for 21 years until 2001. This was the second-longest term for any IOC president. During his time, he moved the IOC headquarters to Lausanne, Switzerland. He also worked hard to make the Olympic Games financially healthy. He did this by making new deals with television channels.

Samaranch made many big changes to how the Olympics work. He wanted more women to be part of the Olympic movement. He also helped bring different countries together to compete. For example, he helped South Africa rejoin the Olympics after apartheid ended. He also helped the People's Republic of China join the Games. Under his leadership, professional athletes were allowed to compete. He also helped the Paralympic Games grow starting in 1984. He even made a rule to separate the Summer and Winter Games by two years.

His hard work earned him many special honors. In 1991, the King of Spain gave him the title of Marquess of Samaranch. He also won the 1990 Seoul Peace Prize. After he retired, he became the Honorary Life President of the IOC. He died in Barcelona on April 21, 2010, at the age of 89. Today, people remember him through special places. The Samaranch Museum honors his work. Also, a sports hall in Sarajevo is named the Juan Antonio Samaranch Olympic Hall.
