Puigdemont held several important roles in his home region. He was a member of the Parliament of Catalonia starting in 2006. He also served as the Mayor of Girona from 2011 to 2016. The referendum took place on October 1, 2017. Many people voted, and 92% of them wanted independence. However, the Spanish government said the vote was not legal. There was a lot of tension and some people were hurt during the event. On October 27, 2017, the Catalan Parliament declared independence. This led the Spanish government to take control of Catalonia directly. They removed Puigdemont from his office. He and other leaders then moved to Belgium to avoid arrest.
