Carles Puigdemont is a prominent Catalan politician and journalist.

He is currently the leader of the political group Together for Catalonia, known as Junts. His life has been defined by his efforts to achieve independence for Catalonia, a region in northeastern Spain. This movement has led to significant legal and political conflicts between the Catalan government and the Spanish state. Because of these events, Puigdemont has spent much of his recent career living in exile.

Puigdemont was born on December 29, 1962, in the village of Amer. His family has deep roots in the Girona province. His grandfather founded the Pastisseria Puigdemont bakery in 1928, which the family still owns. Growing up, Puigdemont was influenced by his family's support for Catalan independence. He began his professional life very early. By age 16, he was already working as a reporter for the Diari de Girona. He wrote about topics ranging from local news to football.

Before entering politics, Puigdemont built a successful career in journalism. He worked for the pro-independence newspaper El Punt and eventually became its editor-in-chief. He was also interested in how technology changes news delivery. In 1999, he founded the Catalan News Agency, or ACN. He later served as the director of the Casa de Cultura in Girona from 2002 to 2004. In 2006, he decided to leave journalism to focus entirely on political service. He was elected to the Parliament of Catalonia that same year.

Puigdemont's political rise included serving as the Mayor of Girona starting in 2011. On January 10, 2016, he was elected the 130th President of the Government of Catalonia. This happened after an agreement between the Junts pel Sí alliance and the CUP party. As president, he sought to move Catalonia toward becoming an independent republic. To do this, his government passed laws to allow an independence referendum. However, the Constitutional Court of Spain suspended these laws, declaring them illegal under the Spanish Constitution.

The conflict reached a peak during the referendum on October 1, 2017. Although the Spanish government tried to stop the vote, it proceeded. About 43% of Catalan citizens participated in the polling. Of those who voted, 92% supported independence. The event was marked by tension, as the National Police Corps and Civil Guard used force. This resulted in approximately 900 people being injured. On October 27, 2017, the Catalan Parliament declared independence. In response, the Spanish government invoked Article 155 of the constitution. This allowed them to dismiss Puigdemont and take direct control of Catalonia.

Following the declaration, Spanish authorities brought charges of rebellion, sedition, and misuse of public funds against Puigdemont. To avoid arrest, he and several ministers fled to Belgium in late October 2017. This began a long period of legal battles across Europe. In March 2018, he was detained in Germany under a European Arrest Warrant. A German court later ruled he could not be extradited for rebellion, as German law differs from Spanish law on that charge. However, they did allow for potential extradition regarding the misuse of public funds.

Despite these legal challenges, Puigdemont remained active in politics. He was elected as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) in 2019. His status has fluctuated due to various court rulings regarding his parliamentary immunity. In 2021, the European Parliament voted to lift his immunity, but the European Court of Justice restored it in May 2022. He continues to lead the Together for Catalonia party. His career remains a central part of the ongoing debate regarding Catalan sovereignty and the legal structure of the Spanish state.
