Fernando Belaúnde was an important leader in Peru. He served as the President of the country two different times. His first time in office was from 1963 to 1968. He was elected again later from 1980 to 1985. Before he was a politician, he was a professional architect. He designed many private homes and helped plan how cities work.

Belaúnde's life began in Lima, the capital of Peru. His family had a long history of serving the country. His father was a professor and a Prime Minister. Even his great-grandfather had been the President of Peru. Because of political trouble, his family lived in France for a while. He later moved to the United States to study. He earned his architecture degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1935.

His path to leadership included some very brave moments. In 1956, he led a large protest after the government refused his candidacy. The police used big water cannons to push the crowd back. This event became known as the "manguerazo," or the hosedown. Belaúnde walked toward the police alone while holding a Peruvian flag. This famous image helped people see him as a true leader. He then started a political group called Acción Popular.

During his first presidency, Belaúnde focused on building the nation. He wanted to connect the country by building large roads. One big project was the Carretera Marginal de la Selva. This highway linked the coast to the northern rainforest regions. He also worked on many water and electricity projects. He helped build many homes for families in the cities. However, his time in office ended when the military took control in 1968.

After the military rule ended, Belaúnde returned to the presidency in 1980. He won the election with 45 percent of the vote. One of his first jobs was returning newspapers to their owners. This helped make sure people had freedom of speech again. He also finished the important road projects he had started years before. His later years were difficult due to money problems and unrest. He remains a major figure in the history of Peru.
