In Europe, one big group helps manage this game. This group is called UEFA. It stands for the Union of European Football Associations. UEFA is the governing body for football across the continent. It works to promote and develop the sport. There are 55 national associations that belong to UEFA. They help make sure the game is played well. This group is based in Nyon, Switzerland. It acts as a unifying force for many different people.

UEFA runs many famous competitions for players. They oversee games for professional clubs and national teams. One very big tournament is the UEFA Champions League. This started in 1955 as the European Champion Clubs' Cup. They also run the UEFA EURO for men's national teams. This tournament began its first finals in 1960. For women, they run the Women's Champions League. This competition first started in 2001. They even have games for younger players.

These tournaments help set high standards for the sport.

Making sure the game stays fair is a huge job. UEFA sets rules for things like club licensing. They also look at financial sustainability to keep clubs stable. Most of the money they make goes back into the game. They reinvest 97.5% of their net revenue into football. This money helps build new facilities and better fields. It also helps with coaching and training for referees. They use these funds to support grassroots initiatives. This helps the sport grow for many years to come.

UEFA has a long and interesting history. It was founded on 15 June 1954 in Basel, Switzerland. This happened after the Second World War. Several groups wanted to work together more closely. Three people helped shape the start of UEFA. Their names were Ottorino Barassi, José Crahay, and Henri Delaunay. They wanted to expand international play and use new technology. Since then, the group has grown much larger. It now includes many more members than when it began.

UEFA is part of a much bigger world of football. It works closely with FIFA, the world governing body. They also work with five other continental groups. One special project is the UEFA Together programme. This helps develop the game all around the world. UEFA also uses football to do good for society. The UEFA Foundation for Children helps vulnerable children. They use the sport to promote education and inclusion.
