Linyphiidae

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Linyphiidae are a huge family of very small spiders. People often call them sheet weavers because of their web shapes. In some places, like the United Kingdom, they are called money spiders. This group is the second largest family of spiders in the world. There are about 5,000 known species living in 650 different genera. Scientists are still finding new ones today. For example, a new genus called Himalafurca was found in Nepal in April 2021.

These spiders have a very interesting way of moving around. They use a method called ballooning to drift through the air. They are light enough to catch the wind and fly. This helps them spread out to many different places. However, ballooning can be a hard job for them. They have very little control over where they land. Because of this, many young spiders do not survive the trip.

Scientists study these spiders by looking at their tiny bodies. Many members of the Erigoninae group are only 3 mm or less. The males in this group often have strange shapes on their heads. These shapes are called cephalothorax modifications. They can look like bumps, spines, or even long lobes. One spider named Gnathonargus unicorn has a part that looks like a unicorn horn. Another spider, Perregrinus deformis, has a part that looks like a human nose.

These spiders live almost everywhere on Earth. Some live in the warm tropics. Others live in very cold places like Norway. In Norway, they can walk on snow in temperatures as low as −7 °C. Some females even build their webs in small holes in the snow. They are very important to farmers in the agriculture industry. They act as biological control agents by eating pests like aphids and springtails.

Many things in nature interact with these tiny weavers. Small birds like the goldcrest like to eat them. The spiders themselves hunt for food like flies and other spiders. They are a big part of the food chain. Even though they are small, they play a huge role in their environments. You might see their filmy webs in the morning dew. They are truly amazing little creatures.
