Solar storm

space Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A solar storm is a big disturbance on the Sun. These storms can travel far across the heliosphere. This is the huge area of space around our star. The storms can affect the entire Solar System. They can even reach our planet, Earth. They hit our magnetosphere, which is Earth's magnetic field. These storms create short-term space weather. Over a long time, these patterns are called space climate.

Solar storms happen in a few different ways. First, a solar flare can occur. This is a large explosion in the Sun's atmosphere. It happens when magnetic field lines tangle or cross. Sometimes, a coronal mass ejection or CME happens too. A CME is a huge burst of plasma. This burst can happen at the same time as a flare. These events move outward from the Sun.

Scientists study these events using a field called heliophysics. This is the study of the Sun and space. They look at how the Sun affects its region. They also watch for solar particle events. These are bursts of protons or energetic particles. They track how these particles move through space. Understanding these movements helps us learn about space weather.

There are many specific things to track. The Sun has an 11-year solar cycle. This cycle tracks the activity of sunspots. Most flares and CMEs come from an active region. A solar prominence is a structure made of plasma. It also has a magnetic part in the corona. A magnetic cloud is a quick change in the solar wind. The solar wind is a stream of particles from the Sun.

These storms can create beautiful sights on Earth. A geomagnetic storm happens when a Sun outburst hits Earth. This interaction can cause an aurora. An aurora is a bright, glowing light in the sky. It happens in the upper atmosphere of a planet. This light comes from atoms becoming excited. It is a way to see the Sun's power.
