Solar storm

space Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Sun has big storms. These are called solar storms. They start on the Sun. Then they move through space. These storms can reach Earth. They can even hit our magnetosphere. This is the magnetic field around Earth.

One type is a solar flare. This is a large explosion. It happens in the Sun's atmosphere. It starts when magnetic lines tangle or cross. Another type is a coronal mass ejection. People call this a CME. It is a massive burst of plasma. Plasma is a type of matter. This burst can happen with solar flares.

Solar storms cause space weather. This can change quickly. Long patterns are called space climate. A storm can also cause a geomagnetic storm. This happens when a Sun outburst hits Earth's magnetic field. These storms can make an aurora. An aurora is a bright light in the sky. It happens in the upper atmosphere.
