Some lakes live inside volcanoes. These are called crater lakes.

These lakes form in large holes. These holes appear when a volcano erupts. A volcano might explode or collapse. This creates a deep dip in the ground.

Water fills these dips over time. It can come from rain or snow. Melted ice can also fill them. Some water comes from deep underground. The water level stays steady when the amount coming in matches the amount going out. Water can leave through evaporation or by leaking into the ground.

Some lakes are very big. Lake Toba in Indonesia is the largest crater lake in the world. It formed about 75,000 years ago. Crater Lake in the United States is very deep. It is the deepest lake in that country. It is fed only by rain and snow. This makes the water very clear.

These lakes can also be dangerous. Some lakes can release gases. In 1986, gas from Lake Nyos in Cameroon caused many deaths. Other lakes can cause lahars. These are flows of mud and water.
