A lake island is a piece of land inside a lake.

These islands form in many different ways. Some form when sand and dirt build up on the bottom. Other islands were once part of the shore. They become islands when water or wind wears the land away.

Volcanoes can also make islands. A large eruption can leave a big hole called a caldera. This hole fills with water to make a lake. Sometimes, new land rises up in the middle of the lake. This creates a crater lake island.

Rocks from space can make islands too. When a large meteor hits Earth, it makes a crater. If a lake forms there, a peak in the center might stick out. This peak becomes an island. René-Levasseur Island in Canada is a very large impact island.

Some islands are not solid land. Floating islands are made of thick plants.

They can move on the water. People can also build their own islands. These are called artificial islands.
