Volcanic crater lake

earth science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A volcanic crater lake is a lake found inside a crater. These craters form in two main ways. Sometimes, a volcano has a very big explosion. Other times, the volcano collapses inward during an eruption. This creates a large dip in the ground.

When this dip forms, it acts like a giant bowl. Eventually, water begins to fill this bowl. This creates a special kind of lake that sits high up on a volcano. These lakes are very important parts of the Earth's landscape.

Water fills these craters in a few different ways. It can come from rain falling from the sky. It can also come from melting ice or snow. Sometimes, water travels up from deep underground. This water is often called hydrothermal fluid.

The water level will rise until it reaches a balance. This balance happens when the amount of water coming in matches the amount leaving. Water can leave through evaporation into the air. It can also leak into the ground or flow out over the rim. If the rim breaks, it can cause a sudden flood.

Scientists have studied these lakes for a long time. We now know they can be very large and stay for many years. Some lakes are only there for a little while. These are called intermittent lakes because they come and go. However, caldera lakes can be huge and last a very long time.

One famous example is Lake Toba in Indonesia. This massive lake formed after an eruption about 75,000 years ago. It is the largest crater lake in the whole world. It is very deep and covers a huge area.

There are many amazing numbers associated with these lakes. Crater Lake in Oregon is the deepest lake in the United States. It is located in the caldera of Mount Mazama. This lake is famous for being very clear. It only gets water from rain and snow. No rivers flow into it or out of it.

Another extreme example is Ojos del Salado in Chile. This is the highest volcano in the world at 6,893 meters. It has a small crater lake on its eastern side. This might be the highest lake of any kind on Earth.

While these lakes look beautiful, they can also be dangerous. Some lakes can release gases that are hard to breathe. In 1986, gas from Lake Nyos in Cameroon caused many deaths. Other lakes can lead to something called a lahar. A lahar is a destructive flow of mud and water.

You might also see lakes formed by lava. These are different from true crater lakes. For example, Garibaldi Lake in Canada was made by lava. These different types of lakes show how active volcanoes can be.
