A volcanic crater is a round hole in the ground.

It often looks like a large bowl. This shape is called a depression. Most craters sit at the top of a mountain. These mountains often have a cone shape.

They are made of old lava and rock. Not every volcano has a crater. Some are just large holes in the earth. These holes can be very deep. They can also be very wide.

How does a crater form? It starts with hot, melted rock called magma. This magma sits in an underground magma chamber. During an eruption, the magma and gases rise up. They travel through a tube called a conduit. The materials reach a hole called a vent.

The gases escape into the air. The magma comes out as lava. This is how the crater is made.

Sometimes, the ground changes in a big way. An explosive eruption can happen. This can empty the magma chamber below. Then, the ground above sinks down. This makes a much larger hole. Scientists call this a caldera.

A crater can also be on the side of a mountain. We call these flank craters. Some craters might even break open. This can happen from lava or from erosion.

Craters can look many different ways. Some craters fill with rain or melted snow. This creates a crater lake.

Some of these are even soda lakes. Other craters are called maars. A maar is a crater that sits on a flat plain. It does not have a big mountain. These form when magma hits wet rocks. This causes a phreatic eruption. It is a special kind of explosion.

Think about the shapes you see in nature. A crater is like a bowl sitting on a hill.

Most craters are found near active volcanic zones. These are places where the earth is moving. You might see them on big mountains. You might also see them on flat ground. They are a part of how our world works. Every crater tells a story about heat and pressure.
