A crevasse is a deep crack in a glacier or ice sheet.

These cracks are very important to study in glaciology. Glaciology is the study of glaciers and ice. Crevasses show us how the ice is moving. They can be very wide or very deep. These cracks can also have vertical walls. Sometimes these walls melt into arches or other ice shapes.

Crevasses form because of stress in the ice.

Glaciers move over a soft layer called a plastic substrate. Different parts of the ice move at different speeds. This creates shear stress between the pieces of ice. This stress makes the ice break along its faces. Water can also change how crevasses form. Water can flow into a crack and make it deeper. It can even reach the bottom of the glacier. This water can lubricate the bed and make the ice move faster.

There are three main types of crevasses.

Transverse crevasses are the most common kind. They stretch across the glacier and form when a valley gets steeper. Splaying crevasses appear along the edges of the glacier. They result from stress at the margin of the ice. Longitudinal crevasses form parallel to the direction of the ice flow. These happen when a valley widens or bends. They form in areas of tensile stress.

Crevasses can be very dangerous for people.

A snow bridge might cover a crack. This bridge is made of old snow and snow drifts. These bridges can make a crevasse invisible to travelers. Falling into a deep crack can cause fatal injuries. Hypothermia is a common cause of death in these situations. The Khumbu Icefall on Mount Everest has very deep crevasses. People must be very careful when they walk on glaciers.

Climbers use special tools to stay safe.

They often travel in a rope team. This means multiple climbers are tied together with a rope. They also use friction knots to help. This is similar to how a seatbelt keeps you safe in a car. The rope helps the team if someone falls. It connects the people so they can help each other. This makes navigating the ice much safer.
