An ice shelf is a huge, thick platform of ice.

It floats on the ocean water. This ice starts as snow on land. Over time, that snow turns into glaciers. These glaciers flow toward the coast. Eventually, the ice reaches the ocean. It becomes too thin to stay on the ground. Then, it begins to float on the sea. This floating part is the ice shelf.

Ice shelves work in a very special way. They act like brakes for the land.

Glaciers on land push against the floating shelf. This pressure keeps the glaciers from moving too fast. Gravity also pushes the ice from the land toward the sea. This flow moves ice from the grounding line to the front. The grounding line is where the ice leaves the land. The front is where the ice meets the open ocean.

Scientists have studied these ice structures for many years. They watch how the ice changes over time. They look at how much snow falls on top. They also look at how much ice melts below. Some ice even grows back on the bottom of the shelf. This balance is very important for the ice.

In the past, researchers have tracked many different shelves. They use these studies to understand our changing world.

Most ice shelves are found in Antarctica.

The Ross Ice Shelf is the largest one on Earth. It is about 450,000 square kilometers. That is roughly the size of France. In the Arctic, things are different. The Ellesmere Ice Shelf lost 90% of its size in the last century. Other shelves, like the Milne Ice Shelf, also broke up recently. In 2020, the Milne Ice Shelf lost over 40% of its area.

Ice shelves are different from sea ice. Sea ice forms directly on the water. It is much thinner than a shelf. An ice shelf is a thick slab of glacial ice.

When a shelf breaks, it is called calving. Large chunks of ice break away into the ocean. This can happen suddenly. It can also happen over many years. Watching these changes helps us learn about the cryosphere. The cryosphere includes all the frozen parts of our planet.
