An ice sheet is a massive body of ice.

It covers land areas larger than 50,000 square kilometers. Today, only two ice sheets exist on our planet. The Antarctic ice sheet is the largest single mass of ice on Earth. It covers about 98% of the Antarctic continent.

The Greenland ice sheet is the other one. These huge ice layers are much bigger than small ice caps. They are very thick because of how they grow.

Ice sheets grow through a steady process. Most snow that falls onto the sheet never melts. Instead, the weight of new snow layers presses down on the old snow. This pressure turns the snow into thick ice. This growth is still happening today. In 1942, a fighter plane crashed in Greenland. By the time it was found 50 years later, it was buried under 81 meters of ice.

Even though the surface is cold, the bottom is often warmer. This warmth comes from geothermal heat from inside the Earth.

Gravity keeps the ice in constant motion. The ice flows outward from the central plateau. This plateau is the highest point of the ice sheet. The ice moves toward the edges, or margins. The slope is low at the center but gets steep at the edges.

Sometimes, the ice moves through fast channels called ice streams. This can happen if meltwater reaches the bottom. This water acts like a lubricant to make the ice slide. Even tides from the ocean can cause the ice to surge. A large tide can move the ice by about a foot in under an hour.

In the 1970s, a scientist named Johannes Weertman shared a new idea. He suggested that ice sheets sitting below sea level might be unstable. This is because seawater is denser than ice. If the ice gets too thin, seawater can push into the gaps at the bottom. This is called marine ice sheet instability, or MISI.

Ice shelves can help prevent this by acting like a dam. When an ice shelf breaks, the glaciers behind it can flow much faster. For example, the Larsen B ice shelf collapsed in February 2002. After it broke, four glaciers began to flow at a much faster rate.

Understanding ice sheets helps us understand our changing world. During past ice ages, many different ice sheets covered the Earth. The Laurentide and Cordilleran ice sheets once covered much of North America.

The Weichselian Ice Sheet covered Northern Europe. The Patagonian Ice Sheet covered southern South America. Today, the way the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets change is very important. Their melting can cause sea levels to rise. Scientists watch these huge masses of ice to learn about climate change.
