Antarctica is a massive continent in the Southern Hemisphere. It sits right around the South Pole. The land is surrounded by the Southern Ocean. It also touches the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans. This place is the largest ice desert on Earth.

Most of the land is covered by a huge ice sheet. This sheet covers about 98 percent of the continent. It is the largest ice sheet in the world. It holds 90 percent of all the ice on our planet.

The ice is so thick that it is very heavy. It actually pushes the ground down. In some spots, the land sits below sea level. There are even lakes of liquid water deep under the ice. One famous example is Lake Vostok. This ice also holds 70 percent of the world's fresh water. If it all melted, sea levels would rise a lot.

Researchers made a very detailed map of the land in 2018. This map is called the Reference Elevation Model of Antarctica. It shows details as small as a car.

High mountains divide the continent into two main parts. These are the Transantarctic Mountains. They separate West Antarctica from East Antarctica. West Antarctica is the smaller side. It is home to the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. Some people worry this ice might collapse if temperatures rise. If it did, ocean levels would rise by a few metres.

East Antarctica is much larger than the West. The South Magnetic Pole is located here.

There are many volcanoes hidden beneath the ice. This is called glaciovolcanism. Scientists found 91 new volcanoes under the ice in 2017. This added to the 47 volcanoes they already knew about. In West Antarctica, there are 138 possible volcanoes. It is hard to study them because the ice is so thick. Some volcanoes, like Mount Erebus, are famous and active.

Other active volcanoes include Mount Melbourne and Mount Berlin.

Volcanoes can change the landscape in big ways. They can cause ice to melt from underneath. This might create a loop of more melting and heat. There are also huge canyons hidden under the snow. These canyons run for hundreds of kilometers. The largest one is called the Foundation Trough. You cannot see these canyons from the surface. They stay hidden under hundreds of meters of ice.
