It is also called Greater Antarctica. This land makes up two-thirds of the whole continent. Most of it sits in the Eastern Hemisphere. It lies south of the Indian Ocean. The Transantarctic Mountains separate it from West Antarctica.

The geographic South Pole is located right here. This place is very important to our world.

This region is very high and very cold. It is known as the coldest place on Earth. Most of the land is under thick, permanent ice. Deep under the ice, there is a mountain range. These are the Gamburtsev Mountains. They are about the size of the European Alps.

Scientists believe these mountains helped the ice sheet start growing. They sit near a spot called Dome A.

People have studied this land for a long time. The name has been used for over 110 years. Explorers found out more about it during the International Geophysical Year. This happened between 1957 and 1958. In 1962, a group in the United States approved the name.

Today, the Antarctic Treaty System protects this remote area. It bans things like industrial development and nuclear testing. This keeps the land untouched by humans.

Many different lands make up this large region. These include Coats Land and Queen Maud Land. Other parts are Enderby Land and Kemp Land. You might also hear of Wilkes Land or Adélie Land.

These areas are mostly covered in ice. Only small parts of the coast are free of ice. These small spots are called Antarctic oases. One example is the McMurdo Dry Valleys. This area is a type of tundra called Maudlandia.

Life here is very different from other places. There are no trees or shrubs at all. Only moss, algae, and lichens can grow on the rocks.

Small things like mites and springtails live in the moss. The coasts are much busier with animals. Emperor penguins breed during the dark, cold winter. Many seals live in the water and on the ice. You can find leopard seals and huge elephant seals here.
