Antarctica is a vast, icy region at the bottom of our world.

It surrounds the South Pole and sits within the Antarctic Circle. This area is the opposite of the Arctic region near the North Pole. The region includes the huge continent of Antarctica and many islands.

It also includes the Kerguelen Plateau and the Southern Ocean. The region covers about 20 percent of the Southern Hemisphere. The continent itself makes up 5.5 percent of that area.

Nature works in special ways in this cold place. A zone called the Antarctic Convergence forms a natural border. This is where cold Southern Ocean waters meet warmer waters from the north. Because this line moves with the seasons, experts use specific points to track it.

Many living things depend on the ocean here. Tiny creatures called krill are a very important food source.

Larger animals like whales, seals, and penguins rely on these small creatures. You can even find fish like the Antarctic icefish in the water.

Humans have been exploring this remote land for a long time. A Spaniard named Gabriel de Castilla saw snowy mountains there in 1603. Later, in 1675, Anthony de la Roché found South Georgia Island.

The first confirmed sighting of the continent happened in 1820. This was done by a Russian expedition led by Bellingshausen and Lazarev.

People have even been born in the region. James Kerguelen Robinson was the first person born on an Antarctic island in 1859. Emilio Palma was the first person born on the continent itself in 1978.

Life in Antarctica is strictly managed to keep it safe. There are no permanent countries in the region. Instead, the Antarctic Treaty System manages everything south of 60°S latitude.

This includes places like the South Shetland Islands and Peter I Island. This treaty helps protect the land and the ice shelves. Scientists from many countries work at research stations to study the area. More than 40,000 tourists visit the region every year. Most visitors go to the Antarctic Peninsula or South Georgia Island.

Understanding Antarctica is vital for the whole planet. The massive ice sheet is very important for the world's sea levels. If the ice melts, it could cause global sea levels to rise.

Melting ice also changes how ocean water moves around the Earth. This can affect the climate and the ocean's living things. Most of the continent is covered in ice and snow.

Less than 1 percent of the land is actually bare. Only two types of flowering plants, hair grass and pearlwort, grow there.
