Subantarctic

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The subantarctic is a special region in the Southern Hemisphere. It sits just north of the cold Antarctic region. This area spans latitudes between 46 and 60 degrees south of the Equator.

It includes many islands in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific oceans. These islands are often found north of the Antarctic Convergence. This convergence is a boundary where different ocean waters meet. Understanding this region helps us learn about our planet's weather and oceans.

A massive ocean current works in this area. It is called the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, or ACC.

This current is the only one that flows completely around the Earth. It moves eastward through the southern parts of three oceans. The ACC can be as wide as 2,000 kilometers. It reaches depths of 2,000 to 4,000 meters. This current carries 150 Sverdrups of water every second. That is 150 million cubic meters of water per second. It moves more water than all the world's rivers combined.

Ocean currents and water movement shape the world. The ACC and the global thermohaline circulation influence the climate.

Thermohaline circulation is a way water moves based on heat and salt. Another factor is the formation of Antarctic Bottom Water. This happens through halothermal dynamics, which are driven by density changes. These movements also help underwater life thrive. For example, the meeting of waters creates a home for tiny creatures like Antarctic krill.

Many different islands make up this region. Some islands sit in the "Roaring Forties" between 46 and 50 degrees south.

These include the Crozet Islands and the Kerguelen Islands. These places often have tundra, which is cold land with little plant life. Other islands sit in the "Furious Fifties." The Falkland Islands are found here. Unlike tundra lands, these islands can have trees and grasslands. They may even have land that can be used for farming.

Ice is also a major part of the subantarctic. Many islands have glaciers, which are large masses of moving ice.

South Georgia is a group of islands with many glaciers. The Nordenskjöld Glacier is a large one found there. Other glaciers include the Neumayer Glacier and the Ross Glacier. Some islands, like Heard Island, also have volcanoes near their ice. These icy landscapes show how the subantarctic connects to the cold Antarctic world.
