Climate in the subantarctic is shaped by complex circulation systems. The ACC and the global thermohaline circulation are major drivers. Thermohaline circulation is the movement of water driven by density gradients. These gradients are created by surface heat and evaporation. 
There is a difference between scientific and political definitions of the region. Scientists use the Antarctic Convergence to define the subantarctic. Waters south of this convergence are considered part of the Antarctic for biological and hydrological reasons. This convergence creates a unique environment with high marine productivity. It is a vital area for creatures like Antarctic krill.
The islands in this region vary greatly in their geography. Some islands are in the "Roaring Forties," located between 46° and 50° south. 
Glaciers are a major feature of the subantarctic landscape. Many islands host large masses of moving ice. On the South Georgia Group, the Nordenskjöld Glacier is a large feature. Other notable glaciers include the Neumayer Glacier and the Ross Glacier. Some islands, like Heard Island, have glaciers near active volcanoes.
