In February 2019, a group called the Five Deeps Expedition went there. They used a tool called multibeam sonar to find the deepest spot. They found it at a depth of 7,434 meters. This spot is located at 60° 28' 46"S, 025° 32' 32"W. The leader, Victor Vescovo, suggested calling it the "Factorian Deep." He reached the bottom in a small craft named the DSV Limiting Factor.

A key feature of this ocean is the Southern Ocean overturning circulation. This process is the second half of a global thermohaline circulation. The first half is the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation, or AMOC.

This circulation works by moving water in large, deep loops. These loops help regulate the Earth's climate. Today, climate change is affecting this movement. Warming temperatures increase ocean stratification, which means layers of water do not mix easily. This could cause the circulation to slow down or reach a tipping point. In 1937, the second edition moved these limits southward. By 1953, the Southern Ocean was omitted from official publications entirely. During that time, the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific oceans were simply extended southward.

The definition has shifted again due to modern scientific understanding. In 2000, the IHO surveyed its member nations about redefining the ocean.

Most members agreed to redefine it based on ocean currents. They proposed the name "Southern Ocean" over "Antarctic Ocean." A draft edition from 2002 suggested the 60th parallel south as the boundary. While this draft has not been formally adopted, many organizations use it. The CIA World Factbook and Merriam-Webster recognize this definition. The National Geographic Society also officially recognized the Southern Ocean in June 2021.
