For a long time, people disagreed on its borders. Some thought it was part of other oceans. Others used the Antarctic Convergence to mark its edge. This is a zone where cold water meets warmer water.

Today, many use a new way to define it. They look at the ocean's overturning circulation. This is a way that water moves in big loops. This movement is very important for our planet. It helps move water and heat around the globe.

Climate change is now affecting this ocean. The water is getting warmer. This change can slow down the water loops. It can also change the homes of sea life. Scientists study these changes very closely. They want to see how the ocean stays healthy for the future.
