earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

An ocean basin is a place on Earth covered by seawater.

Most basins are large areas below sea level. They hold almost 97% of all water on our planet. Together, all basins cover 67% of the Earth's surface. They have an average depth of about 4 km.

There are several main basins. The Pacific is the largest. The Arctic is the smallest. Other big basins include the Atlantic, Indian, and Southern Oceans.

These basins change over time. This happens because of tectonic plates. These are large pieces of the Earth's crust.

Plates move very slowly. They move about 5 to 10 cm every year. When plates move apart, they can make a mid-ocean ridge. This is a long mountain chain under the sea. When plates collide, one might slide under the other. This is called subduction. This can create a deep oceanic trench. The Mariana Trench is the deepest part of the ocean. It is nearly 11,000 meters deep.

Basins also collect things from the land. They act like big bowls for sediment. They even hold the tiny skeletons of sea life.
