Hydrosphere

earth science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The hydrosphere is all the water on our planet.

It includes water on, under, and above the surface. This includes oceans, rivers, and lakes. It also includes ice, snow, and water in the air. Even plants and animals have water inside them.

Most of Earth's water is salt water. It makes up 97.5% of all water. Only 2.5% is fresh water. Most fresh water is frozen in ice or snow. Only a tiny part is in lakes and rivers. This is the water we can easily use.

Water moves in a set of steps called the water cycle. Heat from the sun moves water. It turns water into vapor. This is called evaporation. Water also moves from snow and ice. This is called sublimation. Trees also let out water through tiny holes. This is called transpiration.

Water has been on Earth for 4 billion years. It is not created or destroyed. It just moves from place to place.

Humans change the water cycle. We build dams to block rivers. We also use too much water for farms. This can make some water sources run dry.
