The cryosphere is the part of Earth where water is solid.

This includes snow, glaciers, and sea ice. It also includes permafrost, which is ground that stays frozen. The word comes from a Greek word meaning cold.

Ice helps control our climate. It has a high albedo. Albedo is how much sunlight a surface reflects. White snow and ice reflect most sunlight back into space. This keeps the Earth from getting too hot.

Ice also acts like a blanket. Snow covers the ground and insulates it. This stops heat from moving easily. Sea ice does the same for the ocean. This helps keep things at a steady temperature.

Ice can last for a very long time. Some ice stays frozen for a million years. Most of the world's ice is in Antarctica.

Today, the cryosphere is changing. Ice sheets and glaciers are melting. Sea ice is also shrinking. This is happening because of climate change.
