Climate system

earth science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Earth has a complex climate system. This system is made of five main parts.

Climate-system
Climate-system

The first part is the atmosphere. This is the air around us. The second part is the hydrosphere. This is all the liquid water. Most of this water is in the oceans. The third part is the cryosphere. This is all the frozen water, like ice and snow.

Carbon cycle

The fourth part is the lithosphere. This is the rocky outer layer of Earth. The last part is the biosphere. This includes all living things.

These parts work together. The Sun provides power for the system.

The Sun warms the tropics more than the poles. This heat makes air and water move. For example, wind moves heat around the planet. The water cycle also moves energy. Water turns to mist and then falls as rain. This cycle is called the hydrological cycle. Even chemical elements move between the parts. This happens in the carbon cycle. Plants take carbon from the air. This helps keep the system in balance.
