The hadal zone is the deepest part of the ocean.

It is found in long, narrow cracks called trenches. These trenches look like the letter V. Most hadal areas are in the Pacific Ocean.

Life here is very different. There is no sunlight at these depths. The water is very cold. The water also has extreme hydrostatic pressure. This means the weight of the water is very heavy. It can be more than 1,000 times the weight at sea level.

Most animals here are scavengers. They eat bits of food that fall from the top of the ocean. They also eat fine sediment. Some animals live in the open water. We call these hadopelagic species. Others live on the bottom. These are called hadobenthic species.

Some creatures, like the supergiant amphipod, grow very large. Other small creatures stay very tiny.

Exploring these deep spots is hard. The heavy pressure can break machines. In 2014, a robot named Nereus imploded in a trench. To reach the bottom, people use special ships. Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh reached the bottom in 1960. They used a ship called the Bathyscaphe Trieste.
