Hadal zone

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The hadal zone is the deepest part of the ocean.

Pelagiczone

It sits inside long, narrow cracks called trenches. These trenches look like the letter V. This zone covers less than 0.25% of the seafloor. However, these trenches make up over 40% of the ocean's total depth range. Most of these habitats are found in the Pacific Ocean.

This area is a very extreme place for any living thing to survive.

Life in the hadal zone works in a very special way. There is no sunlight at these depths. Because of this, plants cannot grow here. Instead, tiny bacteria act as the first link in the food web. They use gases like hydrogen or methane to make energy. Most other animals are scavengers. They eat bits of food that fall from the upper ocean layers. This falling food is often called marine snow.

Some animals live in the open water. We call these hadopelagic species. Others live on the trench sides or bottom. These are called hadobenthic species.

Scientists did not always know this zone was different. In the early 1950s, two separate trips found something new. The Danish Galathea II and the Soviet Vityaz expeditions saw a shift in life. This shift happened at depths that were deeper than the abyssal zone. In 1956, Anton Frederik Bruun proposed the name "hadal." He named it after Hades, the Greek god of the underworld. This name describes the parts of the ocean deeper than 6,000 meters.

Pressure is one of the biggest facts about this place. Pressure increases ten-fold as you move from sea level to 1,000 meters. In the hadal zone, the pressure can exceed 1,000 atmospheres. The deepest known part is the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench. It reaches a depth of about 10,935 meters. Many creatures have special bodies to handle this weight. Some animals, like certain amphipods, grow to huge sizes. Other small creatures, like copepods, stay very tiny.

Exploring these depths is a very hard job. The heavy weight of the water can crush machines. In 2014, a robot named Nereus imploded in the Kermadec Trench. Humans use special submersibles to reach the bottom. In 1960, Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh reached the Challenger Deep. They used a craft called the Bathyscaphe Trieste. Later, James Cameron made a solo dive in 2012. He used a craft called the Deepsea Challenger to reach the depths.
