Abyssal zone

earth science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The abyssal zone is a deep layer of the ocean.

Pelagiczone
Pelagiczone

It covers 60% of the Earth's surface. This zone is in total darkness. Because there is no light, plants cannot grow there. Instead, animals eat marine snow. This is bits of dead material that falls from above.

The water is very cold. The pressure is also very high. To live here, animals must change. Many fish have a slow metabolism. This means they use power very slowly. They also move slowly to save energy. Some animals use bioluminescence. This is the ability to make their own light. Most of this light is blue.

Some fish have special bodies. The Dumbo octopus has fins that look like ears. The Tripod fish has long fins to stand on the seafloor. The Mariana snailfish lives in very deep trenches. Even in this dark place, life finds a way to thrive.
