Because there is no light, plants cannot grow there. Most ocean life needs sunlight to make food. This way of making food is called photosynthesis. Without light, deep-sea animals must find other ways to eat. Some eat marine snow that falls from above. Others eat whale falls, which are dead whales on the floor. Some live near hydrothermal vents. These are cracks in the sea floor that let out hot water. In these spots, life uses chemosynthesis. This is a way to make food using chemicals instead of light.

The deep sea is also very high in pressure. Pressure is the weight of the water pushing on you. At the bottom of the Mariana Trench, the pressure is huge.

Many deep-sea fish are small to stay safe. They often have soft, jelly-like bodies. They also do not have air pockets that might collapse.
