An engineer named Peterson made a trap called the Peterson Closing Net. This net let Chun catch animals at very specific depths.

In 1898, Chun led a big trip on a ship named the SS Valdivia.

He and his team visited many islands. They spent many months exploring the ocean. Chun found many new animals during this trip. He even discovered the vampire squid.

Chun also studied how animals move. He found that some creatures move up and down the ocean every year. This is called seasonal vertical migration. He also looked at how tiny plants live at different depths. He wanted to show people how amazing the deep sea is. He wrote books to share his finds with everyone.
