They are famous for their powerful claws. These claws help them hunt for food.

There are two main types of mantis shrimp. Spearers use sharp, spiny limbs to grab soft animals like fish. Smashers use heavy, hard clubs to crack shells.

Smashers strike with incredible speed. This fast move makes tiny bubbles in the water. We call these cavitation bubbles. When these bubbles pop, they hit the prey too. This means the prey is hit twice in one strike!

Mantis shrimp also have the most complex eyes in the world.

Their eyes sit on stalks that move in every direction. Each eye has many tiny parts called ommatidia. These parts help them see many colors. Humans have only four types of light sensors. Some mantis shrimp have up to 16 types! They can see ultraviolet light and even polarized light.
